Branded "Crypto Mom" by the Twitterati for dissenting from the SEC's decision to reject a bitcoin ETF, Hester Pierce has made her name by championing digital assets.
Her stance is informed by a clear idea of the role the SEC should play, which in her own words, is "not to be the ones who decide which innovations and which technologies get through and which ones don’t.” She has also argued that "it would be a foolish thing for the government to try to" ban Bitcoin, and that “you’d have to shut down the Internet.”
As the cryptocurrency market has matured considerably since the first ETF rejection in 2017, hopes are high that her accommodating attitude could play a role in helping to see approval of the first U.S. ETF in 2021.
